Code Breaking Competition.

In September 2007 several teams from Whitehaven School entered the Cipher Challenge.. This is a national code and cipher breaking competition. Three of our students actually won £25.

How to Break Codes

Learn as much as you can about the language, writer and words in the message that you are trying to break. See if you can find similar documents to the one you are attacking. Look at how they are constructed. Try to guess if there are certain words or phrases that are likely to be in the message you are investigating.

Now try to discover if the message has been enciphered using letters or symbols or whether it has just been jumbled up in some way.
The easiest way to do this is to compare the letter frequencies in the target message with those of an unenciphered message in the original language.

These techniques will crack most simple cipher systems.
