These are a collection of mathematical games with proven educational value. Some are ancient strategy games like chess or go. Others like DROD have a more modern feel. These are all games which we play in the department. There are links to programs that you can download to play these games at home. There are also links to websites where you can play these games online.
Make sure you ask your parents before playing games against other human players over the Internet!
Be aware that free software might contain viruses, trojans and other forms of malware. Always keep an eye on what your machine is up to after installing free software. I use scrap machines to evaluate new programs.

DROD Deadly Rooms of Death

Caravel Games DROD is the acronymn for Deadly Rooms of Death. The Rooms of Death are a 30 level dungeon full of cockroaches which you must annihilate. This requires some serious thinking even on the easiest levels. You can design your own levels using the game editor which comes with the download.

Colossal Cave Adventure

Winadv21 This is the archetypal computer game. This is where it all began. You have to explore a huge cave system whilst fighting monsters and stealing treasure. There are lots of versions of this game available. Just type colossal cave adventure into google. Try drawing a map as you go!
This is a huge archive of ancient games. You want the winadv21.zip file near the bottom of the page.

Dungeon Construction

Dungeon Index How to construct a simple single player dungeon adventure using HTML and graphics. This is much easier than you might think.

In the Logo programming section you will find notes on how to write multiplayer games. There is help with using Logo to write HTML on the fly and communicate with other players.
If there is enough interest next year then we will construct a MUD.

Sliding Piece Games

Box World Totally addictive box moving game. This isn't the version in the picture as the link has died this one works at present.

There are a huge number of games that can be played on boards made from rows of squares. Pieces are allowed to slide and some times hop over other stones.
Several sets of rules are possible.

If you are in school then the firewall might not let you get at these games as they are written in Java. You will also need to have an up to date version of the JavaVM running on your system.

An excellent version of the ancient arcade classic 'Pong' written by Luke in year 9.
The program even allows you to use chop and spin on the puck.
